George’s slightly off-center view of the world
Portland’s Tilikum Crossing opened about a year ago. The bridge is open to buses, streetcars, light rail, bicycles and pedestrians. No truck or auto traffic. Walkers and bikers travel side by side, each with a designated lane. A guerilla artist apparently decided the symbols were lacking character, and so added some personality.
With great fanfare, Portland opened its new bridge across the Willamette River. The Tilikum Crossing, or “Bridge of the People,” is open to pedestrians, bicyclists, buses, streetcars, light rail, and emergency vehicles. Private automobiles and trucks are not allowed on the bridge.
The name comes from the Native-American Chinook Jargon, meaning people, tribe or family.
